Insider's Tour of Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral

  • Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral 256 South 8th Street Philadelphia, PA, 19107 United States (map)

APT-DVC invites you to this behind-the-scenes tour of Saint George Greek Orthodox Cathedral in Philadelphia, which will highlight the restoration of grand three-story classical wood stave columns (in progress) as well as masonry restoration (completed) at the entry portico.

Wood repairs to the columns utilize traditional materials including oakum, linseed oil putty, and the application of linseed oil paints with sanded finishes. The project also uses CNC-cut profiles for wood dutchman repairs.

The Cathedral was designed as Saint Andrew’s Episcopal Church in 1822 by John Haviland and is located on South 8th Street in Philadelphia. Haviland modeled the church on the Temple of Bacchus at Teos. He constructed the building in brick, with scored stucco, and wood painted in a sanded finish so that the whole appearance was as if it was made from stone. The Church was sold to the Greek Orthodox community in 1921, since then the Cathedral has been an important part in the development of the Greek community in Philadelphia.

The tour will begin at 5:00 p.m. on July 16. Closed-toe shoes and hardhats are required, as this is an active construction site. A limited number of hardhats can be made available. Registrants will be required to sign a waiver on site on the day of the tour. The tour is currently limited to 20 attendees.
