The Gazela Primeiro was built in Portugal in 1901 as a commercial fishing vessel, spending nearly 70 years catching cod in the Grand Banks off Newfoundland. After several storms put her into retirement, the historic tall ship was acquired by the Philadelphia Maritime Museum in 1971 as an example of historic sailing vessels of the time sailing up and down the east coast for many years. The Gazela passed into the stewardship of the Preservation Guild in 1990, supporting a strong volunteer program that has extended her range of activities as well as extensive and ongoing repairs. Docked at Penn’s Landing, the vessel serves as an interactive museum and classroom connecting youth and adults to the waterfront and interest in maritime history.
