A big challenge is how to improve existing historic buildings to address climate change, energy conservation, and limited construction budgets. The goals of sustainable design and historic preservation can overlap to create positive solutions. This program will review resources for evaluating alternative approaches; briefly look at examples of successful projects; dive into research on Life Cycle Analysis pertaining to windows; consider a Case Study for a recent window improvement project; and share an Exercise for Sustainable Window Renovation options.

Window options include rehabilitation of wood windows, use of exterior or interior storm sash, use of double glass in existing wood frames, or replacement with new windows. The life cycle impacts considered include projected energy savings, initial manufacturing of new windows, and projected life expectancy, durability, and replacement over the long term. Cost implications include repair costs, new material costs, and the future replacement costs. The presentation will last 45 minutes with time for Q&A.
