I think we, as preservation professionals, can do a better job of communicating what we do, why we do it, and why anyone should care. I’d love to be a part of APT-DVC’s efforts to promote communication about how and why we work to preserve buildings and sites across disciplines and across generations.

I enjoyed being a part of APT-DVC’s 2024 workshop “Understanding the Role of Materials Testing in the Preservation Design Process.” My favorite part was the discussions and debate between the younger professionals. I’m interested in being involved with more events that leave me inspired by the next generation of preservationists.

From two years in leadership at another organization, Ellevate Philadelphia, a professional women’s organization for the Greater Philadelphia region, I can share lessons learned such as revamping their monthly newsletter, sending out surveys to understand what membership wanted, and developing monthly events that members looked forward to attending.

I’ve also been experimenting with different ways to communicate why we should care about preserving places with history. We developed a game for DoCoMoMo Philadelphia 2022 to explore options for replacing Modernist walls of glass. I created the Philly history podcast and blog, Found in Philadelphia, to engage new communities with the past. And I teach preservation courses at Thomas Jefferson University and Rutgers-Camden that involve students in preservation efforts in Germantown and Lawnside, NJ.

I bring my experience working in cross-disciplinary historic preservation projects. I love seeing a site through the eyes of different experts, not just architects, landscape architects, engineers, and contractors, but also historians, planners, community engagement consultants, and community developers. That’s the fun part, sharing knowledge with people at fascinating places.
